Canadian show-jumping champion Ian Millar can be considered the Iron Man of the Olympics. He is currently tied with Austria’s Hubert Raudaschl for most Olympic appearances with nine, and has 36 years in between his first Olympic Games (Munich, 1972) and his last (Beijing, 2008). He was unable to participate in the 1980 Moscow Olympics after Canada joined the US-led boycott to protest the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan.
At 65, he has been named to the Canadian Olympic team to the London Olympics, and once he does compete in London, he will move ahead of Raudaschl with his record 10th Olympic appearance, 40 years after his first. This would then be the fifth decade of Olympic competition for the accomplished rider, since he has appeared in the Games every decade since the 1970s.
Curiously, Millar won his first and thus far only Olympic medal just recently, helping the Canadian team bag a silver medal in the team equestrian competition in Beijing.
