Taipei (The China Post/ANN) - Taichung police forces Wednesday arrested 14 Taiwanese that allegedly involved in a job interview scam targeting Chinese nationals, the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) said yesterday.
The telephone scam ring offered fake job vacancies in major United States hotels and amusement parks to Chinese applicants online, according to the CIB in a released statement.
They would lie to applicants that there are job opportunities in America that requires Chinese-speaking people. After conducting interviews with Chinese applicants via telephones, the ring members would ask them to open an account with 400,000 yuan (US$63,000) amount in it so that they could use the money to book plane tickets and accommodations in the U.S. for these interviewees.
The ring members would later hack into these accounts for money. The fraud ring has defrauded mainland Chinese out of an estimated NT$10 million (US$340,000) for the past few months, the CIB said.
Most of the victims are young Chinese nationals with good English-language skill and educational background who hold an American dream.
The Taichung police arrested two main suspects surnamed Chang and Liao, together with another 12 suspects of the ring Wednesday.
These suspects are now under investigation by the Taichung District Prosecutors Office, the CIB said.
