2012 Olympic outing confirmed for Mario and Sonic

Having appeared in video games for the 2008 Summer Olympics and 2010 Winter Olympics, Nintendo and Sega mascots will once again take to track and field in Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games for Wii and 3Ds.

Nintendo are promising new competitions in football and equestrian disciplines as well as the more traditional fare of athletics, watersports and table tennis.

Another new feature will be the addition of Dream Events, which are set against the backdrop of Mario and Sonic video game environments rather than sporting stadia.

A release date is yet to be announced, but past performance suggests six or even nine months prior to the July 2012 Olympiad.

Konami's retro reboot for DS, New International Track & Field, made it to retail in time for the 2008 Summer Olympics, so there's certainly room for additional competitors.

That said, Sega are more than likely to corner most of the market between Mario & Sonic and the official London 2012 game.

Creative Assembly, the UK-based studio best known for the Total War strategy series are rumored to be working on the sports tie-in.
