PUTRAJAYA, April 27 (Bernama) -- A total of 981 victims of trafficking in
persons have been rescued from 2008 till April 26 this year, said Home Ministry
secretary-general Tan Sri Mahmood Adam.
He said the victims, who were made up of 599 women, 122 children and 260
men, were placed under the Protection Order.
Of 465 cases reported and investigated during the period, he said 650
arrests were made by law enforcement agencies.
Of 419 cases brought to the court, 64 were solved and 79 convicted, he said
in a statement after chairing the Council of Anti-Trafficking in Persons and
Anti-Smuggling of Migrants'' (Mapo) meeting here today.
On migrant smuggling, he said 31 cases were reported and investigated from
Nov 15, 2010 till April 26 this year, of which 46 arrest cases were made
involving 663 migrants.
"Mapo appreciates the continued cooperation rendered by the International
Organization for Migration as a consultant by conducting four capacity building
programmes to enhance the skills and accreditation of enforcement officers and
prosecutors.
"We also welcome the strategic collaboration with the United States Embassy
in sharing its expertise in the trafficking in persons with agencies,
prosecutors and Mapo members," he said.
