    Abortion SOS

Medical abortion (using abortion pills) ensures complete privacy, is inexpensive and is a technically simple procedure. However, keep these in mind. n You cannot buy abortion pills over the counter. Consulting your gynae is a must.

In fact, three visits are mandatory: first, to date your pregnancy, check for possible complications, sign a consent form and get the first dose of meds (anti-progesterone that blocks pregnancy hormones); next, 48 hours later for the second dose (antiprostaglandin which triggers miscarriage); finally, two weeks later to confirm a complete miscarriage. You can use it in early pregnancy (up to 7 weeks).

Be ready for surgical intervention if needed. It's advisable to take the anti-prostaglandin at a time when your doc will be available to handle any complications (the foetal tissue is expelled after four hours). You will need Anti-D shot, if you are Rh negative. Be prepared for side-effects such as nausea vomiting, diarrhoea, severe abdominal cramps and sometimes headache, dizziness and fatigue. n Report to your gynae if heavy bleeding persists beyond four hours.

It may signify incomplete abortion that will require surgical evacuation. In case of true drug failure (manifested by cardiac activity after two weeks), you will need surgical evacuation because of the risk of abnormalities in the baby. n Women who smoke, are anaemic, have blood clotting disorders, high BP or heart, liver, kidney or pulmonary disease or have suspicion of ectopic pregnancy, should never opt for this method of abortion. Women who have a scar in the uterus or large fibroids or are on anti-TB medicines may have more difficulties if using this method of abortion.
