Actor Newton Lai passes away at age 62

17 Jun – Former TVB Hong Kong actor Newton Lai passed away last Thursday due to acute pneumonia. He was 62-years-old.

Lai started his acting career with a series of martial art films produced by Feng Huang Motion Picture Corp in 1978. In 1980, Lai ventured into the television industry by signing a deal with the now-defunct Rediffusion Hong Kong. He shot his first drama titled "The Legendary Fok" together with TVB actress Michelle Yim in 1981.

The actor then joined Hong Kong's leading commercial television operator TVB in 1985 after Rediffusion went out of business. He had since filmed several high-rated TVB dramas which include "File Of Justice III", "The Legend Of The Condor Heroes" (1994), "Twin Of Brothers" and "Strike At Heart".

Over a span of 17 years, he had taken part in numerous movies.

Several Hong Kong veterans have taken to China's social-networking site, Weibo, to mourn Lai's death. "I Love Hong Kong 2013" actress Susan Siu Yam Yam uploaded a photo of Lai to pay her last respects to the actor.

HKTV actor Felix Wong Yat Wah posted a message reading "Another veteran has left us. What a double whammy! I felt extremely uncomfortable when I learned about this. Life is something that you can't predict."
