Adultery website to launch Singapore edition despite objections

Adultery website AshleyMadison.com is set to begin operations in Singapore despite strong objections from lawmakers and the public.

A "Block Ashley Madison - Singapore" Facebook page has so far attracted some 26,000 likes.

The Straits Times reported that the Canada-based website, which promotes adulterous affairs on the basis that "life is short", has set up a local portal for people to register with.

November 17 is the scheduled launch date, with its founder and chief executive Noel Biden also expected to grace the launch, the paper reported.

The local platform will be available in English and Mandarin; a Tamil and Malay version will follow suit. A paid subscription fee is required for members to contact each other.

The Straits Times also reported that Minister for Social and Family Development Chan Chun Sing was against a Singapore edition of the website.

"I do not welcome such a website in Singapore," Chan wrote on his Facebook page.

"Promoting infidelity undermines the trust and commitment between a husband and wife, which are core to marriage."

The country's Media Development Authority indicated that it would prevent the portal from offering its services in the country. – November 7, 2013.
