LONDON, Aug 3 (Bernama) -- Strong winds at the archery venue cost national

archer Khairul Anuar Mohamad a semifinal slot after he bowed out 2-6 to Takaharu

Furukawa of Japan in the quarterfinals of the Men''s Recurve Individual event of

of the 2012 London Olympics today.

In the event held at Lord''s Cricket Ground here, Khairul Anuar, the world

number 20, equalled his senior Cheng Chu Sian''s achievement in the 2008 Beijing

Olympics as both the Malaysians became stranded at the quarter-final stage.

The Malaysian shot 27-26 in the first end followed by 24-25, 27-21, 26-28

for a final result of 2-6 points.

When Takaharu reach the 6-point mark, he was declared the winner.

Under the International Archery Federation''s (FITA) new rules, the winner of

a competition is not only decided on how many arrows he or she shoots and score

but the winner of each five ends gets an additional two points.

The first archer to reach the 6-point mark also will be declared as the

winner.

Khairul Anuar, from Kemaman, Terengganu, said he''s distracted by the strong

winds.

"I needed to repeatedly adjust the arrows but Takaharu also faced the same

problems. I guess something wrong with my shooting today," he said.

In the third elimination rounds earlier this morning, he had beat three

times Olympian, Larry Godfrey of Britain 6-5, after collecting a bulls-eye, 10

points, in in the shoot-off when both archers were tied with 136-136 points in

the five ends. Takaharu entered the quarterfinals after defeating Baard Nesteng

of Norway 6-2 in another third round elimination match. Prior to beating

Godfrey, Khairul Anuar had started his challenge in the Men''s Recurve Individual
