AHMAD PHESAL APPOINTED NEW KUALA LUMPUR MAYOR

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 (Bernama) -- Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing

Ministry secretary-general Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib has been appointed as the

new Kuala Lumpur mayor for two years, effective July 18.

Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister, Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja

Zainal Abidin in a statement today said Ahmad Phesal, 58, would replace Tan Sri

Ahmad Fuad Ismail whose contract expires on July 15.

"As the ministry''s secretary-general he was involved directly in the

policies of Federal Territories, especially Kuala Lumpur, including Greater

Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley, River of Life as well as other development programmes

which will come handy when carrying out his duties as the Mayor of Kuala

Lumpur," he said.

Ahmad Phesal joined the civil service in 1977 and among positions he had

held were assistant director and assistant principal director of the Economic

Planning Unit and secretary of Labuan Municipal Council.

Ahmad Phesal holds a Master''s degree in Town and Regional Planning from the

University of Wisconsin and a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Sociology

from

Universiti Malaya.
