AMBULANCE REACHES SNATCH THEFT VICTIM IN 16 MINUTES

GEORGE TOWN, July 12 (Bernama) -- The Penang Hospital attended to a snatch

theft victim who laid motionless on a road in the Rifle Range Flats here

yesterday, said its director, Dr Yasmin Sulaiman.

She said an ambulance arrived at the scene 16 minutes after receiving a

call.

Commenting on a newspaper report that an ambulance delay had allegedly

caused the victim''s death, she said the hospital''s Emergency and Trauma

Department call centre was alerted about the incident at 6.34am.

She said an ambulance was despatched at 6.45am and arrived at the scene five

minutes later.

An assistant medical officer and medical assistant provided initial

treatment to the victim, who was unconscious, before taking her to the hospital,

Dr Yasmin said in a statement today.

She said the woman was given a follow-up treatment after the ambulance

arrived at the hospital at 7.10am.

In the incident, Tan Kim Chuan, 60, succumbed to head injuries without

regaining consciousness nine hours after the snatch theft.

A closed-circuit television footage, which had captured the incident, also

revealed that 10 people walked past her but did nothing as she lay unconscious

for seven minutes.
