KUALA LUMPUR, 8 May (Bernama) -- The Asian-Pacific Association of Banking

Institutes (APABI) Conference was successfully officiated today in Kuala Lumpur

by the Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia, Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz. It marked

the start of the 2-day regional conference themed “Global Challenges, Local

Opportunities”, which is being attended by almost 500 delegates, and 27 speakers

and moderators from 23 countries. It is being held in conjunction with the 14th

APABI Biennial Meeting that will be held following the conference.

APABI was established in 1986 with the objective to collaborate towards the

advancement of banking and financial education in a spirit of cooperation and

mutual understanding among its members. The Institute of Bankers Malaysia (IBBM)

represents the only member country to be Chair of APABI more than once – the

first time being for 1992-1993 and now again for 2012-2013. APABI now consists

of banking institutes from 20 countries with IBBM being one of its founding

members.

IBBM has been actively involved in the Association’s activities since its

inception to form strong bonds and working relationships over the years with

fellow APABI members, many of whom were represented at the conference in record

breaking numbers. In his welcome address, Chairman of IBBM, Tan Sri Azman

Hashim, said that “It is our hope that more countries from the Asian Pacific

region will join APABI to further widen its reach towards the sharing of banking

education best practices.”

The conference features sessions on current issues relevant to the banking

industry, which includes topics such as strategic leadership and growth,

corporate governance, cross-border market penetration, technology in banking and

banking education. The sessions are being presented by local and international

personalities from leading financial organizations such as Dow Jones, Booz &

Company, Bangor University, Chartered Banker Institute, Boston Consulting Group,

Ernst & Young, The Conference Board, Maybank, Asian Institute of Finance and

banking institutes of APABI.

The keynote speaker at the conference was author and economist Graeme Maxton,

who specializes in Asian economies and global business challenges; and draws on

over 25 years of consulting, advisory and editorial work. Maxton appears

regularly on major international news channels including the BBC, CNN and is a

regular guest host on CNBC’s morning investment programme “Squawk Box”. He is

the author of “The End of Progress - How modern economics has failed us”,

questioning conventional ideas about the long term prospects of economic growth,

the sustainability of humankind’s resource use, the consequences of China’s rise

and the West’s measures of progress. The book was nominated for the Financial

Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award 2011.
