BERNAMA SIGNS AGREEMENT TO BUY NIKON DSLR CAMERAS

KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysian national news agency, Bernama,

has signed a partnership memorandum with Nikon (M) Sdn Bhd to buy 40 digital

single-lens reflex (DSLR) Nikon D3s cameras worth RM1.2 million.

Bernama general manager, Datuk Hasnul Hassan, said Nikon''s equipment and

accessories had met with the news agency''s requirements to upgrade its

    photographic equipment.

"We have been thinking of the upgrade for the last two years and had looked

    at various options.

"With this agreement, we hope to produce better quality pictures," he told

reporters after the signing of the memorandum here today.

Hasnul and Bernama editor-in-chief Datuk Yong Soo Heong signed for Bernama,

and Nikon was represented by managing director for Nikon Malaysia and Singapore

Masanobu Tsunoda and Nikon Malaysia consumer products marketing department

    general manager, David Ng.

He said in the first stage, Bernama would spend about RM1.2 million to buy

40 DSLR cameras, including two lenses (24-70 and 70-200) and one flash, while in

the second stage, it would spend about RM800,000 for the software, applications,

    desktop and laptop.

Hasnul said with the upgrade, the news agency''s photographers would expand

their role to take video clips to be used for Bernama TV.

He said Bernama was upgrading its photography department to get ready for

    the 13th general election (GE).

"Hopefully, when we cover the GE we will get good quality photographs," he

    said.

Hasnul said the news agency has for the last two years ventured into a new

business, which was publishing photography book and it was appropriate to have

    good pictures.

Meanwhile, Ng said Nikon''s equipment and service support would help the news

agency improve and further strengthen its competitiveness in the industry.

"Many newspapers are currently using Nikon equipment including The Star,

China Press, Malaysian Reserve and Malay Mail.

"It is also used by Xinhua News Agency and AFP," he said. -- BERNAMA
