  • Chinese official flips out at airport after missing flight

A high-ranking official in the Chinese government lost his cool (and then some) when he and his family missed their flight at the Kunming Wujiaba International Airport in Yunnan Province, China.

A video shows the man, identified as Yan Linkun, standing near a boarding gate. There is no sound, but reports from Beijing Cream suggest he'd just learned that he and his family had has missed their flight—for the second time.

It's then that the temper is lost, never to be found again. Yan tosses computers, bangs on the desk and acts in a manner frowned upon at preschools, let alone highly trafficked airports. A crowd gathers to watch the spectacle, but nobody appears willing or able to stop the carnage.

Yan later released a statement apologizing for his actions. "I failed to be a qualified political adviser as well as a good father. My irrational actions and rudeness have caused some losses to the airport as well as bad effects to the public, so I sincerely apologize to the airport and

  • In what is an important addition to the Cute Animals Watching Television canon, a video of a pair of kittens transfixed by a women's tennis match has made its way to YouTube.

The kittens, hanging out on a scratching post, appear to be hanging on every stroke in the match, punctuated by what sounds like No. 1-ranked Victoria Azarenka's signature shrieks.

Unlike some of her opponents, the kittens seem to be unfazed by the noise.

Because the camera is fixed on the felines, it's unclear which match they are watching—setting the video apart from other pet-channel-surfing clips. In the video below, for example, a 3-month-old golden retriever is videotaped while watching "Air Buddies," a 2006 film about five golden retriever pups that set out to rescue their kidnapped parents.

That video has been viewed more than 4.5 million times on YouTube:

  • Scientists are trying to identify the strange black spidery objects in these images. (Michael Benson/NASA/JPL/University of Arizona/Kinetikon Pictures)

Someone alert Ziggy Stardust, there appear to be spiders on Mars.

Strange black objects seen from 200 miles above the surface of Mars are generating interest and speculation that the unidentified objects could be anything from geysers to sunbathing colonies of microorganisms.

NPR presents several photos of the objects, including one taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on Jan. 27, 2010, that appears to show "little black flecks dotting the ridges, mostly on the sunny side, like sunbathing spiders sitting in rows."

The objects were first spotted in 1998. Interestingly, they appear when the surface of Mars begins to warm, showing up in the same location most of the time. And then when the Martian winter approaches, they disappear with the same precise regularity. The images have been brought into greater detail by Michael Benson in his book "Planetfall: New Solar System Visions."

Most scientists, including teams from the U.S. Geological Survey, Hungary and the European Space Agency,

  • Photos of the spider before it was removed from the woman's ear (Imgur)A woman who went to China's Changsha Central Hospital complaining of itching in the left side of her head was told by doctors that the source of irritation was a spider that had been living inside her ear canal for five days.

Doctors reportedly used a saline solution to flush out the spider in order to avoid having the spider burrow deeper inside the canal or bite her.

The flushing technique was successful and the woman reportedly wept with gratitude after being told the spider was removed. Doctors say they believe the spider entered the woman's home while the home was undergoing renovations, and crawled into her ear while she was sleeping.

A report by CNN states that spiders and other bugs are appearing in greater numbers this summer due to warm weather and drought conditions across the U.S.

"All insects are cold-blooded, so in extreme heat they develop quicker, which results in more generations popping up now compared to previous summers," Jim Fredericks, an entomologist and wildlife
