Bookies detained while watching game

CHERAS: Police detained two men, believed to be bookies, while they were watching the nailbiting Euro 2012 semifinals between Spain and Portugal early yesterday.

Cheras district police chief ACP Mohan Singh said the duo in their 30s were arrested at a restaurant here at 4am.

"We are now in the midst of establishing if these two are linked to the other betting syndicate detained by Selangor police earlier this month."

Mohan said police seized two iPads, two mobile phones and RM11,000 cash from the suspects.

"The duo have no previous criminal records and are unemployed." He said the bookies may have been operating via websites and did not meet punters face to face.

"The duo's arrest may lead us to a bigger syndicate. Investigations are underway to find out their backgrounds," added Mohan.

Police have classified the case under Section 6(3) of the Betting Act 1953 which involves betting in a common betting house and bookmaking.

If convicted, the suspects could be liable to a fine between RM20,000 and RM200,000, and a maximum five year's jail.
