KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 (Bernama) -- Highway safety and medical experts will
combine their knowledge towards overcoming and preventing accidents at the
''Multi-agency and Interdepartmental Critical Analysis of Bus Accidents''
conference in Genting Highlands on June 25 and 26.
There will be representatives from the Road Safety Council, Home Ministry,
Road Transport Department, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital, Universiti
Sains Malaysia Hospital, University Malaya Medical Centre, Health Ministry,
Public Land Transportation Commission and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety
Research at the event.
The conference, being held for the first time, is being organised by the
National Safety Council (MKN) in collaboration with the Malaysian Society for
Traumatology and Emergency Medicine (MASTEM) and Genting Malaysia Berhad, to
find the best solution to overcome issues related to road accidents, including
road safety aspects at accident prone areas.
Traumatology Senior Consultant and Head of Kuala Lumpur Hospital Emergency
Department Professor Datuk Seri Dr Abu Hassan Asaari Abdullah said the
conference was being held following an accident involving an express bus at
KM4.5 of the Genting Highlands road on March 5, which claimed two lives and
injured 22, as well as other road accident deaths.
"This conference involves experts from various departments to carry out an
in-depth analysis of the bus accident management system and will provide more
comprehensive steps for the future," he told reporters here, today.

Dr Abu Hassan said the conference would also focus on communication aspects
between the agencies involved to improve their response and prevention
activities in facing accident risks based on past cases.
Based on the current ratio, 28 to 38 people out of every 100,000 Malaysian
citizens are bound to face accidents everyday.
He said the conference would be a platform to increase the quality of
immediate responses during accidents, especially bus accidents.
"We have called experts who are experienced in this field and every
suggestion will be formally proposed and put forward to reduce the current
accident rate," he said.
The conference is scheduled to be launched by the Minister in the Prime
Minister''s Department, Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.
