Business stockpiles rose for 17th month in May

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. businesses added to their stockpiles for a 17th consecutive month in May. But sales fell for the first time in nearly a year, a sign that many companies could be forced to trim supply levels if the economy weakens.

Business supply levels grew 1 percent in May, the Commerce Department said Thursday. Sales fell for the first time in 11 months. It was the worst showing for sales since June of last year.

Economists worry that businesses may have miscalculated consumer demand and could be stuck with unwanted inventories. That would trigger cutbacks in orders and cause manufacturing activity to slow.

Steven Wood, chief economist at Insight Economics, said that weak sales could mean that business supplies will "make little contribution" to growth in the April-June quarter.

Still, May's rise in inventories pushed total stockpiles to $1.51 trillion. That's up more than 14 percent from the recent low of $1.32 trillion reached in September 2009, when businesses were slashing inventories to control costs in the wake of the deep recession.

Inventories rose at all levels of business. Stockpiles held by manufacturers rose 0.8 percent. Inventories held by wholesalers rose 1.8 percent.

Retailers only increased their stockpiles 0.4 percent. The small rise reflected a 0.7 percent increase in inventories of autos and auto parts and declines in inventories of furniture and building materials. Clothing stockpiles increased 1 percent and inventories of stores such as Wal-Mart and Macy's rose 0.5 percent.

Bleak job growth and high gas prices have shaken consumer confidence. A separate report Thursday showed that retail sales rose just 0.1 percent in June, after falling for the first time in 10 months in May.

For June, the unemployment rate inched up to 9.2 percent and employers added just 18,000 net jobs, the fewest in nine months. That's down from an average of 215,000 jobs per month that were created February through April.

Manufacturing has been one of the strongest sectors of the economy since the recession ended two years ago. Factory activity expanded at a faster pace in June after slowing sharply in May, according to the Institute for Supply Management. Economists have said they expect manufacturing growth to continue in the coming months, but they have cautioned that the gains are likely to be smaller than activity over the past year.

Supply disruptions stemming from the natural disasters in Japan have led to shortages of auto and electronic parts. Falling-but-still-high gas prices this summer has hurt consumer spending, which makes up 70 percent of economic activity.

I wonder how many Americans know that the depression really kicked in 2-3 years after the crash of 29?

Yep...I wonder how many Americans were also taught in school that FDR fixed the great depression when in reality he made it flatline and worse. It was WWII that broke the fever...scary to relate it to todays events.

      Obama's Bluff

President Obama claims that if the debt ceiling is not raised he can not guarantee senior citizens will receive their social security checks on August 3.

      This fear mongering must stop!

House Republicans need to pass legislation to guarantee that seniors receive their social security checks. Pass the approved legislation on to the Senate and see if Democrats vote against it. Any bets?

Then send the bill to the President for his signature.

I’ll see your debt ceiling and raise you the national debt.

I keep hearing them say ".... since the recession ended." Tell my neighbors, college graduates, and myself and many others with out work, the recession has ended two years ago. obama is a marxist punk thug who will stop at nothing to destroy the middle class so he can have his socialist workers paradise.

The economy is proportionate to the times as we arrive closer and closer to Obama Care and all the other big government legislation passed from congress since 2006. Remember that even after Obama and the Dems go, we will have a mountain of clean-up to deal with to fix this economy. Their ejection will only be the beginning of repair.

The Obummer recession turned into the Obummer Depression! Man could not find his way out of a golf bag! Interesting how you denigrate those who voted for Obama. May I assume that you voted for Mc Cain? If so then the best you can do is speculate on how he would have turned things around. Obama said he'd go after the oil companies, and he's tried. The people wanted better health care, and he tried. He asks for compromise and cooperation and he gets the Dems and Reps worrying about keeping their ideals pristine, instead of what's good for the people. Now I realize that this is your opinion because, otherwise, you would probably have something constructive to say.

No one in their right mind would spend a cent unnecessarily with the economy on the brink of the bankruptcy cliff. When you loose you job you still have to feed your children, even though for every dollars in food stamps improves the economy by $1.79.

"no one in their right mind" should be the case but we were not give a choice but to spend about $2,000,000.00 to study and observe African males while they wash their testicles as part of the many unnecessary spending areas of the Stimulas Package.

Brazil got 8 BILLION in Stimulus/Porkulus money so they can develop BRAZIL's off shore OIL...as per George Soros's command, since he owns $980 Gazillion worth of Petrobras stock...as Obama and his EPA were refusing to allow the Oil Companys in the Gulf of Mex. to get permits to DRILL HERE DRILL NOW.

And ACORN DID get THEIR promised Moolah MILLIONs worth for delivering Obama his needed votes to win in 08.

Any increased sales have come from inflation due to high gasoloine prices. Gas is still way over priced even though the analysts try to down play it because the price dropped a few cents.

I don't understand why businesses can misread the American consumers' demand. Everyone except the top 1% of Americans are tapped out; and you wonder why we can't buy and spend?
So I'm guessing layoffs is next right? Demands go down, inventories goes up, don't need so many employees, layoffs go up. How's that tax cuts championed by GOP back in 2010 going to trickle down to the middle class again? Explain that to me one more time please.

Federal spending now accounts for 24.3% of GDP.

That's the new Obama the Goof baseline budget.

      The Goof is completely nuts.

Don't vote for a Democrat ever again.

Boot Obama the Goof in 2012.

The culprits for selling out USA are Walmart. the biggest culprit of them all....and follow by all these Ivy league CEOs of big corporations - outsourcing manufacturing to China and services to India.. And lets not also forget those unions who are also partly to blame. Yes, saving money short term, but in the long run, USA losing everything! .. Is it worth it??? These culprits should be charged with treason!
