Chelsea striker Fernando Torres is certain Roberto Di Matteo's side will at least challenge for the Premier League title this season if they do no win it.

The Stamford Bridge club stumbled to a sixth-placed finish in the top-flight last term, their lowest final position since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003, but a Champions League triumph and expensive new signings have instilled extra confidence at the club.

Eden Hazard, Marko Marin and Kevin De Bruyne have already arrived, while Internacional's Brazil international attacking midfielder Oscar is expected to be added to that list after the Olympics as well, and Torres believes they will definitely be contenders come May 2013.

Torres told his personal website: "I would love to win a Premier League. Hopefully it will happen this year, but for sure we will be challenging for it."

The former Liverpool man enjoyed an impressive summer with Spain at Euro 2012, winning the competition and finishing as joint-top goal scorer, but the Premier League could be even tougher to win in his eyes, with there being a large number of team capable of success.

"In my opinion, the equality between the big English teams is at a peak," he continued.

"You just have to look at the way City sealed the title, at the last gasp, and how the team that won the Champions League finished sixth."

The season’s curtain-raiser, the Community Shield, is a match that Torres is looking forward to, suggesting that it is a match that will sum-up everything to do with the Premier League's biggest club, fighting to win every competition.

He added: "That's how the [Community Shield] will be, a battle from start to finish between two teams who are obliged to fight for everything this season in England and in Europe."
