COMPANY DIRECTOR JAILED THREE YEARS FOR CHEATING BUSINESSMAN OF RM400,000

SHAH ALAM, June 20 (Bernama) -- A company director was sentenced to three

years'' jail by the Sessions Court here today after he was found guilty of

cheating a businessman of RM400,000 seven years ago.

Judge M.Bakri Abd Majid handed down the sentence on Ab Ghafar Khalid, 61,

after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubts against the

prosecution''s case.

However, he allowed a stay of the sentence pending an appeal and raised Ab

Ghafar''s bail from RM30,000 to RM40,000.

Ab Ghafar was charged with deceiving Abdul Hamid Bawal, 56, into believing

that he could help the victim to obtain loan of US$400 million and this prompted

to hand over a cheque for RM400,000 as processing fee for the loan.

The offence was committed at a restaurant in Section 2 here on March 21,

2005.

Deputy public prosecutor Jaizah Jaafar Sidek prosecuted, while Ab Ghafar was

represented by lawyer S. Suresh.
