Complaint to Pope on Najib's high-handed tactics

A group of 365 Malaysian Christians, including Catholics, have signed a letter addressed to Pope Benedict XVI, complaining about Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's crackdown on the July 9 peaceful protest for electoral reforms.

They also expressed concern over the timing of Najib's visit to the Vatican, and pointed out the lack of religious freedom in Malaysia, citing the Lina Joy court case and the seizure of books on Christianity as examples.

The 365 signatories also expressed concern that Najib's visit to the Vatican at this time could be seen as securing popular support for the coming 13 th general election, which must be held by mid-2013, and which could result in him clinging to power.

The letter, titled “Recent Political and Social Developments in Malaysia: Towards a more comprehensive understanding of realities in Malaysia”, and published in full by the NGO Aliran, is addressed to the Pontiff, with a copy also sent to Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, who is based in Singapore.

In the letter, the group said the crackdown on Bersih 2.0's call for electoral reform saw the coalition of more than 60 NGOs suffering a clampdown by the authorities in Malaysia, which has all along been ruled by the same coalition of political parties, now led by Najib.

It said the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBHST), of which the Catholic Church of Malaysia is a part, had affirmed Bersih 2.0's right to conduct its peaceful walk for what it considered ‘just demands'.

The signatories also said that Bersih 2.0 had deferred to the Agong, who intervened to head off a potential confrontation.

However, the government continued to declare the movement an illegal organisation and rejected its proposal to hold the gathering in Stadium Merdeka.

After his visit to the Vatican yesterday, Najib said Malaysia and the Vatican have agreed to establish formal diplomatic relations to promote bonds of mutual friendhip and strengthen cooperation between both sides.

Najib and Pope Benedict XVI met at at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, outside the Italian capital Rome.

Concern over rights and religious freedom

The letter also sought to urge the Pope to critically understand the political and social realities in Malaysia, and not to hold a one-sided view.

They acknowledge the meeting would help promote Christian-Muslim dialogue, an initiative the Church undertook in 2005.

This was also something Najib has espoused upon, being a leader of moderate Muslim country, but the group noted that political leaders in Malaysia had manipulated ethno-religious sentiments all these years, and mobilised ethno-religious grounds in order to stay in power.

Describing the Najib-led BN government as “anything but moderate”, they described him as someone who “does not do what he preaches” and “does not walk the talk”.

They expressed concern in the government's repression of civil society groups fighting for clean and fair elections.

Explaining further on the street protests, the signatories claimed it was a result of frustrations from the inadequate electoral system that the MCCBHST took part in the peaceful Bersih 2.0 protest.

They are worried that foreign governments and leaders who host Najib could be influenced by his talk of moderation, whereas the government had used excessive force, time and time again, the most recent being the Bersih 2.0 crackdown earlier this month.

They also noted that Najib and other BN leaders had manipulated ethno-religious sentiments irresponsibly and attempted to demonise the leaders of Bersih 2.0 as anti-Islam.

The signatories also expressed their suspicious concern over Najib's political agenda in winning electoral support from Christians in Sabah and Sarawak, where they noted 43 percent of the population belonged to that faith.

The 365 also noted that with Sabah and Sarawak being considered the BN's “fixed deposits”, they were worried over Najib's political agenda in the matter.

The letter said while the Malaysian constitution protected the freedom of religion, there have been curbs to this right, which is a universal fundamental human rights.

As a result of all these, they hoped and prayed the pontiff would see Najib's true intentions when dealing with the Malaysian government.

How do you feel about this article?

The large number of poor among the Malays is the direct result of mismanagement and incompetence of BN and UMNO leaders who don't " walk the talk". These dirty corrupted politicians enrich themselves and claim to defend the Malays. Dirty politics among BN politicians has also caused the rise of Racism, beginning with Mamak M Kutty Iskandar. The Malays have been deprived of so much which has led to them believing that the other races encroachment is the cause of their poor status. If RM10,000,000,000 ( billion) a year in the form of corruption is lost to corrupted politicians, greedy businessmen and leaders, does Malaysia have competent leaders? POWER CORRUPTS, ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY. The larger Malay Rakyat must understand this for Racism to be kicked out of Malaysia.

Only 365? I thought they would have gotten more signatures... It was sent around too late. Anyway, it was good that they did it. Very happy with the news. Unfortunately, it didn't mention the sorry state of education, it missed out on the refusal by the Govt to prosecute the Al Islam magazine for descrating the Holy Eucharist, the mob that surrounded the church in Perak, Interlok, the complete destruction of the Catholic Schools in which practically all the cabinet ministers are from...

So many many infractions by the BN Govt was left out. Najib got off easy. But with Diplomatic relations with the Holy See, let's see how the BN bullies the Christians in the future.

Funny how you look at things that happen in Malaysia! Every mishap is being blamed to the Government, in other word Najib. I bet should you tap run dry it's Najib's fault, and also should any member of your family meet with an motor accident he is also to blame. Grow up pls.
      • gadingsingh 10 months ago
Correct Anti Vice, because the when the tap runs dry, the government or its agent didnot do their work. if I cannot pay the bill, the government use my share in petronas and timber for themselves because I am the orang asal tanah malaysia, so I should have the share in all the natural product of the land.
When there is an accident, The government is responsible because they did not build good roads, motorcycle lanes, street lightning and quality modenas, proton saga or perodua which I am using, because I pay tax to the government. So the government should provide the best because they've in their control the money derived from oil, timber and the others which I have automatic share. The share should be the same for all citizen not for themselves and their wives only.
        Don't you want your share?

It is wrong to complain about our country's interest to foreign countries or power. It is just giving them the invititation to get involve or making rules upon us to their own benefit. Do they ask our involvement when they have problems of their own ?

What has been done is making shameful and mockery to our country as if we cant fend for ourselves. Do you like foreigners interfere in your life ?

We can solve our own problems our way... and we have survived the worst of everything... we are even being envied by other nations because of our multiracial cultures !

Pls explain how do you think the Pope should meddle in our politics? What do u think he can do? During the PM's recent visit to UK, why wasn't there a letter sent to the Queen with same kind of request? What a waste! Shows how stupid you think about things politic.

Baptism of Fire!. We should be happy that Pope met Najib at Pope's Summer Resident and not Vatican. God Bless Vatican for it still remain "BERSIH" and not become KOTOR" by Najib hidden agenda with his sudden urgent Ties with Vatican. Didn't Utusan ran an article that Opposition want to turn Malaysia into a Christian country?. Now What? Najib want to turn Malaysia into a Christian country "kah?"
    • lawrence  •  10 months ago
As a Christian I am very surprised and folly of the 365 so called Christians to compalin to the Pope about our PM. These 365 people does not know the bible and HIS word, it is a shame, where is the tolerance , love and the TRUTH. Stop judging others as you will be judged. Examine yourself first as Jesus said " those who has no sin throw the first stone". Dont be like the Pharisees and hypocrites spreading lies and gossiping. Dont be used by the oppositions. Malaysia has freedom of religions and Evangelists have been ;coming down to preach freely unlike in the 1980's. Churches have been build and many churches have opened. Look at Kelantan where did the churches enjoy such freedom. Do they allow evangelistic meeting there.Dont disturb the Pope let him try to clear all the scandals first. Ask yourself what can the Pope do, dont tempt him and makea him sin. I am sure many true Christians are enjoying freedom to worship and should appreciate and thankful to the Government. Anby problems, all misunderstanding of the religion write to YB Dato Idris Jala, our Christian minister. God bless..

Feel sad to read that our christians in Malaysia is becoming like UMNO. Writting to the POPE about Najib does it make any diffrent to you. Christians in Malaysia is the most tolerent religion ever since.
Why are we making Judgement on Najib we are thought to Pray for oppreses. Its just like the people who wanted to stone Magdala. By you writting to the POPE its shame to our religious brought up. I have traveled all around the world and curently staying in 100% muslim country I can freely go church and there is Mass everyday. Each one of us are given ways to touch each soul religiously but whats happening in Malaysia is realy sad. My dear friends please keep on Praying for the goverment that makes you happy. Lets not be carried away with fame and glamour.

365 Malaysians signed a letter addressed to the Pope to protest against Najib and his BN-led government, saying that it is far from a moderate government and that under them, Malaysians are deprived of true social and religious freedom. Hhhhmmmmm. There's no denying that they are not exactly wrong there - Najib and gang are not exactly the archangel Michael and his heavenly band of angels!

Oh! Wait a minute! The Kedah state government wanted to ban entertainment totally throughout the month of Ramadhan, regardless of the fact that Malaysia is a multi-racial nation with people of different religious beliefs, and that such an act would have ill-effects on the livelihoods of so many people, as well as tourism and the economy in general?! And now, PAS is also calling for the MTV Worldstage concert at i-City to be banned?! Hhhhmmmmm....

So folks (especially those dim-witted 365 signatories), what if Pakatan takes over the running of the country (which is what those 365 dim-wits are hoping for lah - no doubt about that!)?

With PAS as part of Pakatan, can the 365 dim-wits (and other like-minded people) assure that social and religious freedom will be more safe-guarded and guaranteed under a Pakatan-led government?

How can anyone believe that, even for a minute, when it is so obvious that tolerance and rationality are certainly not one of PAS' strong points, and that this will factor greatly on how a Pakatan-led government will operate...

Many of my Catholic friends are glad that Najib (like him or not) has taken this step. It is a step in the right direction, towards healing of wounds and hopefully, improving conditions. The 365 dim-wits are obviously just acting out of pure hatred for the Federal government, hoping to politicize yet another issue for the political ambitions of the ones they support.

Go to the ground - and you will find that in general, most Catholics (and Christians) in Malaysia think that Najib's move is positive. Don't be fooled by the 365 dim-wits, who are banking on the fact that their actions will be carried by the media, in order to paint a different picture for the world to see (and believe).

As they say, bad news always travels faster than good news. Goodness is easily forgotten while bad news, lies, scandals and controversies are what sells...these 365 dim-wits are banking on exactly that to garner support for themselves and those they support.

if we talk about religious it will make everyone angry because religious as sensitive as race.
religious and race is a sensitive issue......not need to comment on which race or religious do it...this type of saying is prepare to let all malaysian fighting.....if we want to check or catch who is guilty then only that person involve...dont ever mix up whole thing until all stick together then difficult to separate ....just like blame on christian group is a big mistake.....never try to make all religious fighting.....somebody behind this problem.....i hope all malaysian no matter what religious will found out who behind this darkness and not the race or religious...........
Prevent now will save future life.........if dont like the ruler then dont vote for that person next time but not fighting .......think smartly all my malaysian friends.........all race and religious are same and all my friends.... good luck to alllllll...............................

      As I See It!
The 365 Malaysian Christians along with the powered MCCBHST should not only complain and pointed out the Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's crackdown on the July 9 peaceful protest for electoral reforms and the lack of religious freedom in Malaysia, citing the Lina Joy court case and the seizure of books on Christianity as examples. Instead they should also addressed to Pope Benedict XVI that most of the Melayu Muslims in Malaysia (PKR/PAS, not known) do not like to associate ALLAH with The Son, The Father and The (so called) Holy Sipirit. At the same time they should also express their concern about the attire of the person nailed on to the Cross for decades. He also has his right, right? How's that? He should be well covered with a much proper attire or robe, of which, very much ideal for an Idol eh!
