Contractor working on wall to stop further tunnel collapse, says fire department

Repair work including building a retaining wall is being carried out to prevent further soil erosion in the underground tunnel which collapsed today at the intersection of Jalan Pudu and Jalan Hang Tuah, said the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department.

Department assistant director (operations) Azizan Ismail said the contractor is likely to take a day to complete the repair work.

Azizan said the tunnel, which is part of the Pudu underpass project by Kuala Lumpur City Hall, sank twice at about 10.38am and 12.20pm, and damaged Syabas water pipes.

“We predict that the road will collapse further along the tunnel line.” he said.

It is learnt that two idle excavators were in the tunnel when the incident occurred but no casualties have been reported. – July 2, 2014.
