KUALA LUMPUR: Police racked up a whopping RM1.8 million bill for damage to its property and assets as a result of the Bersih 3.0 rally on April 28.
Home Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Mahmood Adam said apart from enduring abuse and being assaulted by protesters, police also had to bear the cost of damage to its vehicles and equipment.
"The high cost incurred could have been avoided and the amount used for more worthwhile purposes, had Bersih 3.0 not taken place," he said in a statement yesterday.
He said a total of 14,331 police personnel were on duty throughout the rally.
They comprised members of police's management, internal security, anti-narcotics, criminal investigation, commercial crime and special branch departments.
