Couple puts wedding party on hold to see 'Virgin Mary' apparition

'They told us it is a blessing for us that she appeared on our wedding day. We had to go and see her."

That was how newlyweds Gabrielle Ann and Kevin Joseph, both 29, ended up putting their wedding party plans on hold for just a little while so they could go and see the much-talked about 'apparition' of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Both Catholics, the couple had just tied the knot at the Church of the Divine Mercy in Shah Alam on Saturday afternoon and were headed to their reception at the Holiday Villa Hotel, a few doors away from the Sime Darby Medical Centre (SDMC) in Subang Jaya.

'We found out about this from the guests who came for the wedding. What was more interesting was that the window on which she appeared faced the hotel, so it was a clear view," said Kevin, a pilot.

Kevin said it had been raining during the wedding mass but it stopped just as they were leaving the church for the hotel.

"As we drove past the hospital, I could see many people walking into the compound looking upwards, so I told Kevin that she is here and that we must go and see her," said Gabrielle, a former nurse at the hospital.

Dressed in full wedding attire as the bridal car pulled over by the side of the road, the couple rushed in to join the hundreds of devotees who gathered to see the image.

In fact, the newlyweds drew a fair amount of attention on themselves, too.

"Everyone was congratulating us and some even took photos with us. But we were so into Mother Mary and we just continued to sit there, looking at her," Gabrielle said.

Not getting enough of the image, the couple returned to the hospital again at 2.30am.

Kevin and Gabrielle were among the hundreds of devotees who rushed to catch a see the image resembling Mother Mary - who Catholics believe to be the Mother of God - over the weekend.

Witnesses say the image began to blur on Saturday night but appeared clearer and more defined again on Sunday morning. Some even claimed to have seen a second image - that of Jesus Christ - forming two window panes below the image of Mother Mary.

Devotees continue to crowd the ground floor of SDMC's new wing, lighting candles and saying prayers. So far, there has been no official comment from hospital or church representatives.
