Cracks found in A380 superjumbo wings: Airbus

European planemaker Airbus warned on Thursday that "minor cracks" had been found on the wings of some of its flagship A380 superjumbo jets, but insisted that there was no risk to passenger safety.

The Toulouse-based company, the main subsidiary of aerospace giant EADS, said it had informed airlines operating the plane about the issue and recommended a way of fixing the problem during standard scheduled maintenance.

"We confirm that minor cracks were found on some non-critical wing rib-skin attachments on a limited number of A380 aircraft," the firm said.

"We have traced the origin. Airbus has developed an inspection and repair procedure which will be done during routine, scheduled four-year maintenance checks," it added.

"In the meantime, Airbus emphasises that the safe operation of the A380 fleet is not affected," it said, adding that European safety regulators had approved the policy and that the plane's performance was not affected.

The A380 is the world's biggest passenger jet and a key product in Airbus's line-up as it battles its main rival US giant Boeing for the top spot in the world civil airliner industry.

The double-decker plane entered service in 2007 after years of technical delays. There are now 67 in service around the world and, while they have never had a fatal accident, there have been teething problems.

In November 2010 a Qantas flight out of Singapore lost an engine to an explosion. The jet landed safely despite damage, but the blast prompted the Australian airline to briefly ground all its A380s.

Seven European and Asian airlines now operate the 525-seater A380, and the company has 243 orders from 18 carriers.

Boeing had series of fatal accidents for the past decades...I hope this European Airbus would not have one...And hope that no air accidents would occur again...fix fix fix...and do the proper job

some air accidents usually starts from a small crack.

Yes, its true. Anything that moves encounter stresses, specially air turbulence. So the danger is there.

Minor cracks, minor faults, minor something. But minor leads to major and fatal crashes. Air travel without question is the safest mode of transportation. However, Air travel like all other forms needed diligence in extraordinary scale. That is they should act now.

A few weeks ago, I saw on discovery channel a story of an airplane that completely fell apart because of two defective bolts in the tail section. They launched an investigation, that found many airlines were using cheap replacement parts to save money. This was not in the Philippines. They also did say that a worldwide effort was being made to stop this. It does make it more frightening to fly, but I will continue to use airlines as there is no other reasonable way to travel. I do feel safer on an airplane than on a bus. I just hope that the government is watching out for our safety. peace

big cracks came from small cracks

i have watched enough real life documentary about aircraft having problems in flight or worse crashing due to the smallest of cracks and with a plane the size of the A380 and only been in service for a few years you are taking a big risk.

what will airbus say if one of them planes suddenly went down in flight.

end of the day a small crack leads to a bigger crack and to think them wings on the A380 has enough stress on them as it is

Minor crack is not critical as per EADS and European Safety Regulators? This poor guys of little knowledge undermined SAFETY!!!!! They risk or gamble innocent lives and investigate to call them EXPERT!!!!!!
