CRIME RATE IN KOTA KINABALU DECLINES

KOTA KINABALU, May 24 (Bernama) -- The police recorded a total of 745

criminal cases between Jan 1 and yesterday, which was a significant drop

compared to the 1,115 cases recorded during the corresponding period of last

year.

Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Tan Kok Liang said the success showed

a 33.18 per cent drop in the crime index in the city.

"There was also a significant drop in street crimes since 2009. As of

yesterday, there were 78 street crimes this year compared with 198 for the same

period in 2009," he said when approached by reporters at the programme, Royal

Malaysia Police With the Clients, at a shopping complex, here today.

However, Tan said vehicle thefts, particularly motorcycles, were still

worrying.

He cited the people''s negligence in leaving their vehicles unlocked as among

the reasons for the thefts.
