Customs officer falls to death during MACC probe

    By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani

KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 — A Customs officer died today after falling from the third floor of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) building on Jalan Cochrane where he was being investigated with others for over a billion ringgit in unpaid taxes.

MACC investigations director Datuk Mustafar Ali said the Customs officer's body was found sprawled on the first floor at 10.15am.

The death comes even as a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) is being conducted into the anti-graft body’s operating procedures following the death of former DAP aide Teoh Beng Hock, who also fell to his death from an MACC building.

Teoh was found dead on July 16, 2009 on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, where the Selangor MACC office had then been located.

During a hastily-convened press conference, Mustafar revealed that the deceased was Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed (picture), a 56-year-old assistant director from Customs Department in Selangor.

He explained that Ahmad had returned to the MACC building at 8.26am today unannounced and requested to meet with the investigation officer.

Ahmad had already given his statement to MACC and released from custody at 12.30PM on Saturday.

He had been remanded on March 29 following an MACC-led swoop on Customs staff, resulting in the arrests of 62 officers.

“The deceased had asked to meet with the investigation officer but did not say why,” Mustafar said.

The chief investigator said an officer then accompanied Ahmad to an office room before leaving to collect the case file but found him missing when he returned.

Ahmad’s body was later found sprawled on the badminton court at the first floor.

“[The] MACC has informed what happened to the deceased’s family and management from his department.

“We have also submitted the matter to the police for further action,” he said.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah confirmed that the case has been classified as sudden death and initial investigation has found injuries to the head.

The MACC last week busted a Customs syndicate responsible for billions of ringgit in tax evasion, money laundering and illegal funds outflows after raiding over 100 different premises nationwide.

Mustafar said the operation included the arrest of a husband-and-wife duo working for the Royal Malaysian Customs Department in an east coast state, who were caught with hundreds of thousands of ringgit in cash “scattered around their house.”

He added that the operation was ongoing and the full value of tax evasion was not yet known.

Its high time for MACC to move their investigation sections and interrogation rooms to either first floor or ground floor to avoid this kind of incidents recurring in order to regain the 'RAKYAT' trust in them.

I hope in future MACC should more transparent when inquiry the witness, How MACC expect the public to trust them if this kind of incident happen again and again.

The solution is simple, MACC! Why not you appoint two or more IOs (Investigation Officers) for any investigations from different races? This will make sure at least one IO wil be with the person/s being investigated at any time and reduce the chances of accepting bribes! Common sense, isn't it?

two wrongs will not make a right. Do we need a royal commission to recommend that all future interrogation be conducted in a single storey building only and with windows secured! What about an inflated giant bags for soft landing?

I think the agency needs to revamp and with this type reputation , how can we expect the public to turst them?
The best approach is to re-evaluate all the staffs and re-assign those unfit staffs to other department to do backroom job.

Install burglar proof at all doors and windows of MACC bldg so no more bodies falling down!!!!

Ever wonder why the cops are backing up the MACC like crazy? Well, that's because they are no different from one another. The way I see it, MACC will use this incident as an explanation why is it NOT SURPRISING for Teoh Beng Hock to commit suicide.

Well, it's like "Teoh commit suicide because he was guilty" over a ludicrous amount of 850? Hmmm... Unless Teoh and his family were starving, surviving on bread and tap water, I doubt anyone would have the sense to sell their soul for such an amount of money. Now, Ahmad might have had a reason to commit suicide if he was indeed guilty. It's billions of ringgit this time. Now, it is hard not to believe that the MACC was involved.

Somehow, the MACC has failed the people. Once the Teoh's case is over, I think they should seriously reform the MACC (as I believe there must be a lot of corruption exist within their own circle) or be abolished all together. If our current PM continue to rule over us, the fight over corruption will only be an "exhibition" after all. Like, yeah... They are doing their jobs right? See?

Haven't they already made our country a laughing stock long enough? What's more shameful, if the fact that the MACC are now so desperate to prove their innocence they resort to shameless lies. But still I must say, nothing will get better long as our current PM continue to rule us.

The Soul of our Innocent Young Teo Beng Hock will see that jusitice is being done.
People in high position should resign for this happening. Oh my God, how come
it could happen the 2nd.time in a just a short span of time in the MACC again.
In Japan the Head of Dept. would have resigned on the spot on events of this nature.
What precations did the MACC take as safety precations after the death of our
young Teo Beng Hock. Now anyone would fear being investigated in the MACC Office.
The PM should act on this urgent issue which has definately eroded the confidence of the
      Rakyat towards the administration.
