Deputy minister: Make it a crime to convert Muslims

An Umno deputy minister has proposed that a 'faith crime act' (Akta Jenayah Akidah) be enacted to criminalise any action to proselytise Muslims.

This follows the raid on the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais), and allegations that Christian organisations convert Muslims by offering financial assistance,

According to a report published by Utusan Malaysia , Deputy Education Minister Puad Zarkashi ( right ) said the nation is in dire need of such a law as the phenomenon of apostasy is spreading and no longer seems a secret.

"That's why, from long ago, I have been proposing, if possible, to have a faith crime act tabled in Parliament in order to ensure there is no effort to apostatise Muslims in our country," Utusan quoted him as saying.

The Batu Pahat MP who is also Umno supreme council member was reported to have said this at an event at Parit Kapis yesterday.

On the issue of the DUMC raid, Puad called on all quarters to respect the federal constitution which clearly prohibits non-Muslims from preaching to Muslims.

"In other words, non-Muslims must abide by the constitution that they cannot do anything to proselytise their faith to Muslims," he said, adding that hiding behind welfare aid to convert Muslims should also be prohibited.

    Wide coverage

Utusan , the Malay daily owned by Umno, continued to give wide coverage on the apostasy issue today.

Apart from statements from politicians condemning Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim and PKR over the handling of the issue, the daily also published a reader's letter urging the government to form a royal commission of inquiry to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegation.

Jamal Lulkhir Jaludin from Pasir Salak said that the issue should not be closed without a definite answer.

"Muslims should suffer from the syndrome of being dumb, blind and deaf."

In another related development, the Facebook page set up last Saturday to support Jais and Selangor exco member Hasan Ali has attracted over 9,000 fans.

According to information stated on the fan page named ‘1,000,000 Muslims support Jais and Hasan Ali to prevent apostasy', it was formed after the DUMC raid and the report of Berita Harian which claimed that Christian organisations converted Muslims with financial assistance.

BN. government is extremist people especially muslim people in the West or UMNO. These people do not know other people sensativity as if their own Malaysia Alone. Our brother and sister who converted to Muslim, we have lost them our generation, our race and our adat name. To me this a crime that cannot be forgiven at all. They are force to be converted because of Muslim make law. This is haram or kafir. Next time, think before your talk.

Stop mucking about conversion and this and that. If there are irrefutable proof that Christians groups are indeed doing what you claim to be, show the evidence in full and stop talking and saying that you have the proof but have till today NOT shown any to support and justify your actions. How, who, what, when and where must be put forth for all to evaluate and if sufficiently supported as so, prosecute them to the fullest extent of the existing laws but please for God's sake do not give us trumped up evidence from story books or hear say or even worst what you perceived to be so called evidence but failing in so many ways to present them as such What are you afraid of; insulting or demeaning us like a 2 year old child or are you just afraid that you do not have anything conclusive to support your actions? Which is it?.

What has a deputy education minister got to do with religion? First we mix politics with religion, now mixing education with religion ? Puad Zarkashi is another product of confused politician. His suggestion borders that of communism. Communism does not encourage religion. Puad !! Malaysia is a democratic country la, where is your grey matter?

The main point here is Malaysian is NOT a country governed by Syariah law. It is a Muslim majority country. As a Muslim, I hate seeing Muslims leaving the religion but again if some Muslims feel that they want to convert and change their name, go ahead by all means. I don't want my grandchildren getting confused seeing someone by the name of Halimah wearing baju kurung consuming non halal food in public whereas she has the right to do so as a Buddhist or atheist or seeing someone by the name of Abdul Hamid wearing a songkok drinking a beer at my Chinese friend's New Year reception and Pak Hamid is a Catholic!!. Let them change their religion and name as long as they remain tax paying and law abiding citizens. By the way when I'm in deep trouble I welcome help from any quarters and I don't care about your religion!!

Do not stir thing up further, the more we argue and pitch against each other, the more grounches we will have towards each others. If someone does not have a strong will to up hold his own religion, it is not worth any efford to convert him.

No offence to all but I think religon is something that a person put his or her faith in for it and it is not something to be preach for. Freedom of religon and the supremacy of any religon should be left untouch by others and not to be preach.

Can we make it a crime to convert anybody's religion. Why Islam only?
If it is to solve the problem of proselytising.
It will only solve Islam's problem. What about other religion?
Please be more sensitive when advising for such action.

i believed that, whatever religions here in Malaysia, it is not that extreme. It's the people themselves sometimes are being the extremist. Like most of you were in here. Most of you were merely not even fighting for your own religion, but more towards your own ego. My point is, most of you are not really doing what your religion had told you, but you argue in here like you really are the saint in your own religion.
