KUALA LUMPUR: Cheras police chief ACP Mohan Singh Tara Singh insists their responsibility is to ensure order and maintain peace in the stadium.
He refuted suggestions that any breach of security in terms of spectators moving into the media box were within their scope of duty.
Mohan was referring to the incident where some fans climbed over the partitions to sit on benches at the media box during the Asian Zone World Cup qualifying match between Malaysia and Singapore at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil last Thursday.
"We moved some fans into the vacant space behind the media area after discussing with FAM. This was because many were left without seats and were crowding the area where the Singapore fans were seated," said Mohan.
"We had to take such measure to avoid any unwanted incidents."
He denied that the police urged fans into the media area as that was beyond their power. However, the fact remains that spectators did intrude the media area and some even sat on the aisles.
Mohan is also unaware of any counterfeit tickets and suggested FAM make a police report before they can investigate the matter.
As for security during the game, Mohan said police arrested three individuals for possession of firecrackers in the stadium.
"We cannot be checking everyone that enters the stadium. The fans must also be responsible."
