Dr M calls all Malaysians ‘racists’

    By Clara Chooi

SHAH ALAM, Feb 22 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad labelled all Malaysians “racists” today when responding to accusations against Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders for playing the race card when lobbying for Malay and Chinese support.

The former prime minister shrugged off criticisms, pointing out that it was common for anyone to ignore the interests of others when trying to get their way.

“This country, everybody is racist. Now, everybody talks about his own interest, doesn’t care about other people’s interest.

“So let’s not hide and say we are not racist,” the straight-talking politician told a press conference today.

“All of them, the people who say I’m racist, they are racist because they say I’m racist,” he added, with a smile.

Dr Mahathir was responding to BN’s “doublespeak” regarding the outcome of support for PAS and DAP, following MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek’s debate with DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng last weekend.

Dr Chua had warned the Chinese community against supporting DAP, claiming a vote for the secular, majority Chinese party would only empower Islamist PAS.

Separately, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak told a gathering of Islamic religious scholars the following day that a vote for PAS would empower DAP.

Let's face the reality. The Malays by nature is a very nice race. They are very easily contented, polite and helpful. Ask any Chinese here and we acknowledge that fact. We can really get along with each other in very good mutual respect since the olden days.

Ok, racism started from the top who politicize to gain power by preaching insecurity to them & threats from the non-Malays who are very much Malaysians at heart. So NEP was in introduced - Fine the Chinese understood the policy of helping the less fortunate and the poor. The Chinese sold 30% shares and equities to this effect. Later on, the leaders wanted more in the name of Malay rights. Islam was brought into the political spot light to garner more strength, support and control over the Malays. Playing with religion not only distant the muslim against the non-muslims but eventually back fired when they have disunity among themselves and whats more with the non malays. Eventually the NEP favor the elite and well connected more than the Malay masses. Not elaborating here. Briefly, the Malay leaders were the first to pitch the Malays against the non malays for power and money only.

Well the rest takes your earnest conscience to accept the actual facts. I come not from a malay kampong but a small chinese town from Johor. My grandparents and my parents never talk a word bad about the Malays when we were young. My only Malay neighbor loved me and wanted to adopt me as a son. I went in & out of their house and both our family shared food without much suspicion over halal issues. We respected their halal needs.

Even though we were among the Chinese majority community, my family and I grew up proud with the P Ramlee era. Malay songs filled our house. Santok Singh, Soh Chin Aun & Moktar Dahari & P Arumugam were our favorite players. When I grew up more I listen to Sudirman's songs. When I came to KL, I lived the life of a cosmopolitan KL but with nostalgic feeling of my small town when I hear the Subuh, Zohor, Asar, Maghrib & Isyak calling for prayers. The sound of prayers filled the air was soothing.

There were no laws, rules or regulation to comply but my sisters wore baju kurong on a Friday to school and to work. My father mixed freely with Malays at coffee shops and dinner tables. I emulated my father's speaking Malay with an accent and today I am proud to speak very fluent Malay.

Well my message here is not that we had nothing Chinese to ourselves but to show you what Malays of yester-years could influence us so much in terms of their culture and lifestyle. We adopted many many things Malay. That should be the way to this day but the Malays are to be blamed for inciting fear, hatred, bigotry, threats, etc to their race pitting against the others. To be honest, I lost that respect on this ground.

They choose to shy away from us by religion. The Malays should know very well and acknowledge that the non Malays are free and easy race who adopts things beautiful. See the very one good example around us of school girls and working ladies automatically wearing baju kurung on a religious Friday. Had it been made compulsory for them to do so by law and not by understanding and influence, it will be a different story.

For now, there is this nostalgic feeling of old good inter racial relationship harmony of yester-year. There is but remain much to be seen of where we are heading without the political will from our Malay led government and religious leaders. Having a law against racial incitement will be good for us. God bless this beautiful Malaysia and her beautiful inhabitants. Cheers!

I agree and respect your ways of living as a Malaysian. It was very Malaysian indeed and what you wrote echoed my parents experience, views and words to me. Most Malays are indeed humble, friendly, helpful and easy going people. That is also why they are also easily influenced and manipulated by their leaders. Leaders who have nothing but personal gains in their minds. Leaders who made sure that their own personal agendas and interests are protected to the point of playing up racial sentiments and creating hatred in the hearts of each race. The leader of all these evil is Tun. He started all of this shit. But despite all these shit, the majority of Malaysians are still peace loving people. All of us are. Whether we are pro BN or otherwise all of us want peace and harmony. That is why Umno racial tactics are working less these days. What do we get from hating each other?? Nothing. But for them, they have a lot gain from our disunity. A lot of us realise this truth. This tactic is working less by the day and "they" are still working hard to defend and maintain it. I cannot deny that human are selfish creatures by nature but I know that Malaysians are also peace loving people and we are not racists. Tun, I totally disagree with your view.

Talk to elderly Malaysians, they say in the 1950s, before Independence, Malaysians got along with each other peacefully, racism isnt a word they used or practiced. Ask them. But look now, everyone hates each other. Where did that come from, Dr. M?

I think if Dr. Mahathir had not been the Prime Minister in this country, we would not be talking about races today?? He was the one who brought many changes and ideas that enhanced the division of bumiputera and non-bumiputera. He is the mastermind of all this mess. We had the country in the wrong hands for 20 over years. What is the point of having high-rise buildings, big stadium and big airport if we are still not united and do not have the same rights and benefits equally for everyone regardless their race and religion?
    • yau  •  2 months ago
When Dato LCW is world number 1 and got to own a Ferrari, there were no race or religion involved. He got it with his own sweat and hardwork. Everyone, regardless of religion or race were happy and cheer for him. That's the spirit we want to emulate here in Malaysia. Instead of binding all Malaysian together with this spirit, this GREAT SHIT just make everyone a racist. Damn! Why do we even have such an IDIOT as a PM.

Most people are racist, including Dr mamak, but not everybody is racist.
Tunku is not racist. Tunku is fair to all people, regardless of race.
But mamak said it is not fair, they must give special privileges to Malays, so dr mamak started the racial policies, so everybody becomes racist.
