KOTA KINABALU, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- Driving institutes should provide a more
comprehensive learning package to produce sensible drivers to handle road safety
issues in the country.
Malaysian Driving Institute Association (PIMA) president Mat Aris Bakar
reasoned that this was because the size of learner drivers was getting larger,
with an average one million form four and form five students eligible to obtain
the licence.
"Users now have a choice, whether to use the automatic or manual
transmission cars for driving tests, and it all depends on the driving
institutes to provide the package," he said in a speech during the 12th PIMA
General Meeting here today.
The meeting was officiated by Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh
Chai who represented Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.
Mat Aris estimated the number of drivers in the country at 12.7 million,
including 527,198 new drivers.
He also suggested setting up a special committee under the transport
ministry to create a standard national curriculum for road safety to reduce
accidents.
