KUALA LUMPUR, 26 May — MRT Corporation (MRT Corp) has pre-qualified 31 companies bidding for RM791 million worth of projects in the 51km Sungai Buloh–Kajang Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line.

The tenders, which opened this week and will close in July and August, are for five systems work packages for the country’s most expensive infrastructure project to date.

“A field of 76 companies participated in the pre-qualification exercise between January 9 and March 12, 2012. The large interest is expected given the stature of this project,” said Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid, MRT Corp’s chief executive, in a statement.

“However, after a fair, transparent and rigorous pre-qualifying process, we have selected these companies, [which] we believe will be able to provide the project the right inputs,” he said.

The companies prequalified for the telecommunication system tender, which closes August 6, are: Indra Technology Solutions Malaysia Sdn Bhd; Samsung SDS Co Ltd; Apex Communications Sdn Bhd – LG CNS Consortium; CMCE – Thales Consortium (CTC); EVD – REI JV, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd; Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia Sdn Bhd & Mitsui & Co. The tender for the three other packages — facility supervisory control and data acquisition system tender, the electronic access control system, and the building management system — will close on July 6.

The SBK Line runs from the north-west town of Sungai Buloh to the south-east city town of Kajang.

Upon completion, it will contain 31 stations and serve 1.2 million people along the route.
