GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government was given the thumbs-up by the Chowrasta Bazaar Traders' Association for swinging into action to revive the heritage market from further deterioration.
Association president Mohd Nasir Mohideen said numerous calls were made to the previous state governments to upgrade the market but to no avail.
"We even picketed in front of the market in 2002, urging the state government and the Penang Island Municipal Council to upgrade the market, but nothing happened.
"Council officers would occasionally conduct surveys in the market, giving us the impression that renovation would take place. However, they would later tell us they did not have enough funds to carry out the project."
The fishmonger said the Pakatan Rakyat-led state government was more responsive.
"I am happy and appreciate that the government, within one term of taking over, had decided to renovate the market. The previous government was around for so long and did nothing."
