Families

of the 44 Malaysians who perished in the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17 crash in Ukraine have given their details and DNA samples to the relevant authorities for the purpose of ascertaining the identity of their loved ones.

"There were victims who had been living abroad but born to Malaysian families, making the number of families who have to undergo the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) ante mortem data collection and DNA process to go up to 47," Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam (pic) said in a statement today.

According to him, MAS had established 43 of the recovered remains to be that of Malaysians.

Meanwhile, he said that Serdang Hospital and Putrajaya Hospital had mobilised their medical teams to provide treatment to victims' family members when needed.

"Up to now, the hospitals have not received any referral," he said, adding that six teams would be assigned to render aid to victims' families at the airport entry via which the bodies would be carried in upon arrival.

The Boeing 777 aircraft was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it crashed in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine near the Russian border on Thursday.
