FIFA launches Argentina-Nigeria match-fixing probe

London, June 4(ANI): FIFA's match-fixing unit has opened a probe into Wednesday's friendly between Argentina and Nigeria, after unusual betting patterns indicated that it had been targeted by match-fixers. Argentina, captained by Manchester City's Pablo Zabaleta, took an under-strength team to Abuja as part of their preparation for the Copa America and were beaten 4-1. "FIFA can confirm that this match between Nigeria and Argentina was one that we had an active interest in, and forms part of a wider ongoing FIFA investigation," The Daily Mirror quoted a FIFA spokesman, as saying. FIFA President Sepp Blatter has already signalled his intentions to clamp down on the "plague" of match fixing and this new investigation will form part of the zero-tolerance campaign. (ANI)
