The final stage of the 2011 Electrolux Design Lab competition held September 7 in London will be streamed live on the web, Electrolux announced on August 26.
The annual Electrolux Design Lab competition, open to industrial design students and recent graduates, challenges entrants to design a household appliance that addresses a particular theme -- which this year was 'sensitive mobility.'
In July eight finalists representing Australia, Canada, Finland, Hungary, New Zealand, Slovakia, South Korea and the USA were chosen from over 1,300 entrants. These eight finalists will present their designs to a panel of expert judges in London on September 7 before one overall winner is chosen. These presentations and the winner's ceremony will be streamed live on the web via the Electrolux site beginning at 08:30 GMT.
The competing designs include a portable microwave oven powered by paper batteries called the Onda; the Smoobo Blender, which works using kinetic energy gathered when bounced; and the Robo Tap Cleaner -- a vacuum cleaner that the users operate by wearing special slippers and tapping their foot on the spot they want cleaned.
The winner of last year's Electrolux Design Lab competition was Peter Alwin from India, who designed a portable cooking device called the Snail that can simply be 'stuck on' the container that needs heating.
Earlier in the year, creative design was also honored at the New York International Gift Fair (August 13-18), where American company Alessi won Excellence in Product Design for the Tèo tea-spoon, which enables users to drain tea bags by pulling them up through the hollow handle of the spoon.
