    Fresh-faced with talent to boot

SINGER-songwriter Yuna has got a lot going on in her life. Currently based in Los Angeles, the 24-year-old has joined the ranks of Malaysians making it big out of the country, after performing for a sold-out audience at well-known venue, Mercury Lounge in New York City.

In May, she joined seminal recording artiste Raphael Saadiq on the road for a string of dates with performances in Baltimore, Washington DC, and NYC's Webster Hall.

She spends her time writing and recording music, working on her photography skills and managing her Malaysian-based clothing shop, I Am Jet Fuel.

With her US debut EP Decorate out digitally, a full album now out and a performance at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) next month, Yuna is one busy young woman.

Still, Malaysia's fresh-faced acoustic, alternative princess takes time off every day to take care of her skin.

"I make sure that every day before I leave the house for work, and when I come back before I sleep, I'll remove my make up, then I cleanse and tone, and then moisturise. It's so important to keep my skin moisturised using Olay Total Effects," said Yuna, whose real name is Yunalis Zarai.

Of course, she was never always so dedicated to her beauty regime. When she was younger she didn't care much about her skin (she didn't have problematic skin like many Malaysians).

"As I reached my 20s, I realised that my skin has started to react to the environment. Now I really see it as an important thing to have a proper skincare regime," she said.

Growing up as the only child, Yuna was taught the dos and don'ts of taking care of her skin by her mother as a teenager. When she went to college to pursue law, it was her roommates that gave her tips and advice - something she still treasures until now.

Like many women around her age, Yuna too has blackheads and whiteheads. The singer who is signed to Fader Label, goes for facials to get them treated, whenever possible. More often, she makes sure she tones and moisturises her skin so it doesn't become worse.

"Sometimes I get so busy I don't really get the chance to have a balanced diet, or enough sleep, so it does affect my skin. Still, to counter that, I drink lots of water," Yuna said.

An icon of moderate and experimental attire, Yuna's fresh and unique sense of fashion has caught the eye of many fashionistas in Malaysia and beyond.

Her fresh and flawless skin adds to her distinctive look - clearly Yuna has taken time and effort to take care of her skin, which is one of the priorities in life despite her busy schedule.

"I feel like your skin needs protection because it protects your body. Plus, healthy skin shows that you are healthy and that is important if you want to appear as a positive, healthy person," she said.

Yuna is also doing her part in having healthy skin, and keeps tabs on the latest development on caring for her skin.

"It is important to educate yourself about skincare because at the age of 25, your skin starts to age, that's when it is most prone to wrinkles and acne. It is also important to know what kind of diet you need, types of vitamins, the best skincare products that would help you take care of your skin," said Yuna.

With the firm belief that healthy skin provides confidence, Yuna is a shining example of achieving success by feeling good about oneself.
