KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- Taxi drivers in the Federal Territories
(FT) will be covered by a group insurance scheme similar to that of hawkers and
petty traders as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak,
recently.
Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja
Zainal Abidin said taxi drivers should also be protected as they faced similar
problems like hawkers and petty traders.
"As taxi drivers can be categorised as self-employed, they should have
medical benefits similar to that of hawkers and petty traders. This insurance
will also provide accident and life coverage," he told reporters after opening
the Federal Territory Hawkers and Petty Traders Development Council''s meeting
here today.
The insurance scheme proposal for taxi drivers will be submitted to the
Cabinet tomorrow, he said, adding that it would be funded by the Kuala Lumpur
Foundation and the federal government.
On the council, Raja Nong Chik said it was set up to look after the
interests of hawkers and petty traders in the Federal Territories.
"It will delve into incentives and development projects for hawkers and
petty traders. Five representatives from hawker and petty trader associations in
the council are representing Malay, Chinese and Indian petty traders and
hawkers," he added.
