Girl, 3, eats leftovers for 2 days after mom dies

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A 3-year-old girl comforted herself with her favorite toy and ate cheese, leftover lasagna and milk for two days after her mother died unexpectedly in their New Zealand home.

The girl's uncle, Pete Silbery, told The Associated Press on Friday that Shylah Silbery managed to open the fridge and comfort herself with a teddy bear named "Possum" after Lauren Silbery, 28, died.

The family last spoke to Lauren Silbery on Oct. 19, he said. Two days later, they were worried enough to call a friend who lived near her Wellington home. The friend could see the girl inside the home, but not the mother, prompting the family to call police, Pete Silbery said.

Police coaxed Shylah to drag a coffee table to the door so she could reach the lock and unlock the door, before she told them, "Mummy won't wake up," Silbery said.

"I can only imagine her in there for that long, trying to wake Mum up as well," he said.

Shylah spent several days in a hospital recovering from dehydration and diaper rash.

"She's doing OK now. She's still bubbly," he said. "When we lowered the coffin into the grave at the cemetery, though, she pointed at it and said 'Mummy's in there.' It was pretty heartbreaking."

Authorities are awaiting the results of an autopsy but don't believe Lauren Silbery's death was suspicious, Wellington police spokesman Victoria Davis said.

My prayers to the family and especially the child. If there was some sort of illness that caused the mother's death, then I hope they will take precautions with the child. Many things are inherited and I'm sure there would be more heartbreak if this should repeat.

I get teary eyed thinking about leaving her for a few hours a week when school starts gosh I cant imagine her being in this world without me! That's my best friend indeed:-) Kuddoz to this smart girl for making it. You can already see that she is a strong individual.

Only a good mother could provide a home where even after her death a child could be safe, comforted and fed while all alone for 2 days. This story breaks my heart, but good mothers are definitely worth more than gold.

        nathan you are an idiot
      • Nathan R 6 months ago
Sorry, I just think logically on this, if god wants to help her, why do we have to ask him to. If he's all knowing he should know she needs help without his creations asking for it. And if Nathan(capitalize because I'm a proper noun) you are an idiot is the best you can come up with, i suggest less church and more school.

I felt bad after reading this article, and feel even worse after reading some of the comments. I cannot believe people would use this article to make jokes or put their political agenda on display.

could also see how close knitted the family is too. 2 days and they get someone to check on the mom n kid. Thank god for their relatives who truly care n love them both. Mommy will have nothing to worry about in heaven. This dear child will be well taken care of.

How terribly sad this is. Poor little thing. I sincerely hope her life turns around for the better and she's remains the sweet little thing she is now. So sorry the Mom died at such a young age.

An amazing and sad story. It brings tears to the eyes of the toughest of men. Most 3 year olds would not have coped as well.
