Google rivals Bing with indoor maps

The indoors mapping space is heating up with both Google and Microsoft expanding their coverage of interior locations in international regions.

Hot on the heels of Microsoft’s announcement that it was adding thousands of interior maps for local shopping malls in North America, Europe and Asia, Google has revealed that it will offer indoors maps for Android devices in the UK too.

“You’ll no longer need to feel clueless when you’re at the railway station, trying to figure out where to buy a coffee before you rush to catch your train from platform 11; nor will you feel embarrassed about asking for the lingerie section when you’re in the department store - because you’ll have all the answers in the palm of your hand,” said Razia Ahamed, Geo Indoor Partnerships Lead at Google UK.

Google is launching the UK service with over 40 venues in the UK including train stations, art galleries, department stores and sporting venues -- just in time for the Olympics Games.

To use indoor maps open Google Maps on your Android mobile phone and zoom in to the venue to discover the indoor floor plan.

Google first unveiled its indoors mapping solution for the US and Japan in November 2011 and has since expanded its coverage to include indoor maps in Switzerland and Canada.
