KUALA LUMPUR: A 57-year-old woman suspected of having suffocated her granddaughter on Wednesday has undergone surgery to reattach a finger.
The finger, found on a chopping board, was reattached by doctors at University Malaya Medical Centre,yesterday morning.
Serdang police chief Supt Abdul Razak Eliaz said the woman was reported to be in stable condition.
"She has been transferred to the orthopedic ward of the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, where she is under close observation," he said.
Police have increased security around her for fear that she might attempt to injure herself again.
Abdul Razak said police had obtained an order to remand the woman for further investigations for seven days.
In the incident, a 10-year-old girl was found smothered to death with a pillow in her house in a condominium block in Puchong here.
Following this, a woman was reported to have tried to jump from the eighth floor unit.
It was reported that the woman had contacted her son to tell him she had taken the life of his child and was planning to take her own, too.
Abdul Razak said police arrived in time to stop the woman from falling.
He said initial police investigations found that the girl had been dead about 12 hours before her body was discovered.
It was learnt that the woman had been suffering from a psychiatric disorder and had stopped seeking treatment.
It was also reported that the girl's parents had been quarrelling frequently over financial problems.
The girl's 31-year-old father said the cremation ceremony would take place at the Kwan Tung Cemetery, here, this morning.
