KUALA LUMPUR: IN Wangsa Maju, the local MCA division has issued an ultimatum to the party's central leadership, threatening to boycott the election campaign if division chief Datuk Yew Teong Look is not fielded.
He is making way for the prime minister's political secretary, Datuk Shafie Abdullah.
"There is no BN spirit now. Shafie has taken on as the BN chief (for Wangsa Maju). The next step is that they (Umno) will take our constituency," Wangsa Maju MCA organising secretary Lim Choon Hong said.
Division deputy chief Ng Kiat Ling said Wangsa Maju MCA had been working hard for many years in the constituency which had been the traditional seat of the party in Kuala Lumpur.
Wangsa Maju Umno has been eyeing the mixed-seat since 2008 and wants to field Shafie, who is the party's division chief.
Some 3,000 MCA members and supporters rallied at a dinner on Tuesday, demanding that Yew be named as the BN candidate.
Some members directed their anger at MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek for not informing the grassroots about the alleged decision to give away the traditionally MCA constituency to Umno.
The rally at Danau Kota, Setapak, was organised by about 80 local organisations.
