HOUGANG BY-ELECTION: VOTERS GO TO POLL TODAY

SINGAPORE, May 26 (Bernama) -- Hougang voters have begun to cast their

votes to choose their new member of parliament for the Hougang Single Member

Constituency (SMC) ward.

Polling stations opened at 8 am and will close at 8 pm.

The Hougang by-election is a straight fight between 34-year-old

Desmond Choo, from the ruling People''s Action Party (PAP) and Png Eng Huat, 50,

from the opposition Workers'' Party (WP).

The single-seat ward with 23,368 eligible voters, fell vacant after the

party expelled the incumbent, Yaw Shin Leong, on Feb 15 this year, following

reports abouts his personal indiscretions.

In the May 2011 general election, Yaw won the Hougang seat with about 65 per

cent of the votes against Choo.

The result is expected to be announced before midnight.
