HOUGANG BY-ELECTION: WORKERS PARTY RETAINS HOUGANG SEAT WITH SLIGHTLY LOWER MAJORITY

SINGAPORE, May 26 (Bernama) -- Workers Party Png Eng Huat won the Hougang

by-election with a slightly lower margin of 13,447 (62.09 per cent) votes,

defeating his opponent from the ruling People''s Action Party, Desmond Choo, who

received 8,210 votes (37.91 per cent).

A total of 21,951 votes were cast, while 294 votes were rejected.

The Hougang by-election is a straight fight between Choo and Png.

The single-seat ward with 23,368 eligible voters, fell vacant after the

party expelled the incumbent, Yaw Shin Leong, on Feb 15 this year, following

reports about his personal indiscretions.

In the May 2011 general election, Yaw won the Hougang seat with about 65 per

cent of the votes against Choo.
