iPhone in Movies: Part II
When the iPhone 5 was launched we brought you the first part of this compilation showing movies that featured iPhones in them. Fast forward a couple of years later and Apple is showing no signs of slowing down, occasionally cropping up every now and again in numerous Hollywood films. As if that's not enough, viewers also got a chance to watch the biopic of the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs played by Ashton Kutcher in 2013's "Jobs" .
Back in 2011, iPhone (and other Apple products such as iMacs and iPads) usage by movie characters really started blooming. It slowed down in 2013 when Apple lost two of its marketing honchos, but never fear – looks like this year Apple is picking up its game again.
With iPhone 6 launched along with iPhone 6 plus and the iWatch, let's commemorate the moment by listing down a few more movies that have managed to slip a second or two of the easily identifiable gadget in their screentime!
The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
A heartfelt romantic movie that is creating quite a buzz on social media this year, "The Fault in Our Stars" tells the story of two teenagers who do not let cancer bring them down, and they find love and support in each other. Also, Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) is just like any other teenage girl. She owns an iPhone. It can be seen in this scene where she exchanges cute text messages with Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort). It's interesting to see how the conversations between the two are blown up on screen so viewers can see what what the lovebirds are texting via their phones.
Blended (2014)
Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore blend together once again for their romcom "Blended", which follows a single father, Jim, and a single mother, Lauren, who find themselves stuck together at a resort for families. A matter which probably would not have been as awkward if it weren't for the fact that both had just been on a bad blind date with each other. When they duo find out that they'll be going to Africa for a much-needed family vacation, and we see the screen split into two, we can't help to notice that Adam Sandler's character in the film is an iPhone user.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" tells the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and his amazing spider senses, who finds himself unable to stay away from Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) and also discovers new leads on his past. Now this one is for the keen-eyed, as several phones can be seen used in this movie, one of them of course being the iPhone that is amazing enough for this hipster Spidey who relies on his gadget even when he's in full costume.
Ted (2012)
There is no mistaking that handheld device, it is an iPhone alright. "Ted", a somewhat bizzare yet touching movie of a man and his teddy bear best friend (Yes, teddy bear) who both refuse to grow up and face life, shows the main characters utilising the iPhone from time to time. It is shown in John's (Mark Wahlberg) hand when he receives a call from his best bud and also in the latter's paw as he talks on it.
Taken 2 (2012)
A movie that has been called a feature-length iPhone ad, "Taken 2" flashes the device onscreen every chance it gets. The movie follows the life of Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson), a retired CIA agent who would stop at nothing to save his daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) from Albanian kidnappers. This movie sure wears its heart on its sleeves, even in the trailer, its love for the sleekly-designed phone can clearly be seen. Take a look at it, note what Kim is holding in her hand as she converses urgently with her father.
American Reunion (2012)
The fourth instalment in the "American Pie" franchise, "American Reunion" shows all the original characters (played by Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Eugene Levy, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari, Tara Reid and more) return to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion. The movie is as American as it gets, even choosing American born iPhone over other phones for their choice of handheld media player.
Pitch Perfect (2011)
Here's one from the year of the Apple product placement boom, "Pitch Perfect" is a movie based on Mickey Rapkin's non-fiction novel of the same name. Beca (Anna Kendrick) joins her school's all-girls singing group The Bellas and the group challenges their all-boys counterpart to a singing duel. Above we see Beca holding an iPhone in her hand while staring intently at it.
White House Down (2013)
In Roland Emmerich's latest disaster film, the White House comes under attack in a collosal show of mayhem and disaster, obviously. The story follows John Cale (Channing Tatum) who has to rescue the President of the United States, played by Jamie Foxx, when the establishment gets taken over by terrorists, when all John wanted was to take his daughter (played by Joey King) for a visitor's tour. When the father-daughter pair get separated, we see the little Ms. Emily Cale secretly recording the terrorists via her iPhone and uploading the video on to YouTube, proving truly how handy the smartphone turned out to be at times of hardship. Before that, when Emily gets to meet the POTUS face-to-face, she also has a fangirl moment with her iPhone, recording the man while he answers her questions and delivers a shoutout to her phone.
Chronicle (2012)
In this unexpected found-footage hit, we see a bunch of teenagers who mysteriously gain superpowers after encountering an unidentified object from (presumably) outer space. While it's all fun and games at the start, one of the boys, played by Dane DeHaan, let's his emotional issues consume his powers and that's what things get truly terrifying! Since this movie is done found-footage style, it means that this film want audiences to think that the clips were derived from multiple sources like; CCTV footage, handheld cameras and of course, phones, which are all 'gathered and pieced together' to formulate this feature. Although we only get sneaking glances of one of the guy's iPhone, it does make an appearance in this movie; sometimes using their powers to make the phone float in the air to capture the footage or sometimes just handheld.
