IRRELEVANT IMAGE OF FARMERS, FISHERMEN MUST BE CHANGED - NOH OMAR

PETALING JAYA, May 24 (Bernama) -- The image of farmers and fishermen in

poor living conditions must be changed as it is no longer relevant with the new

breed of farmers and fishermen in the country.

Agriculture ad Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar said this

was because the new breed of Malaysian farmers and fishermen could now afford to

live in a big house and drive a luxury car as they were earning handsome income

    from their agricultural activities.

When commenting on the image of fishermen in the "Agro Xplorasi" television

show produced by the ministry, Noh said none of the fishermen featured in the

show were living in poor conditions.

"The image should be changed in a bid to develop the agriculture industry.

If public perception remains negative, how can we see rapid progress of

agriculture?" he told reporters after presenting the prizes for the winners of

"Agro Xplorasi" quiz show at Bandar Utama here today.

Noh said he was satisfied with "Agro Xplorasi", which was aired weekly by

TV3 from Feb 26 to April 30, as it had managed to attract 500,000 viewers every

    week.

"At one time, the show had even recorded almost a million viewers,

comprising mostly younger generation," he said.

Due to the overwhelming response, he said the ministry would continue its

collaboration with TV3 to produce the show.

Thirty winners of the "Agro Xplorasi" quiz show received their respective

prizes today. Three winners were selected for each episode and a 42" Panasonic

Viera LCD TV was presented to the first place winner, iPad Wifi 16G for second

and Nokia X6 mobile phone for third.

Abdul Zahid Maula Hashim, 19, who is one of the recipients of the LCD TV,

said he was happy to win the prize as he had been participating in the quiz

    since the very first episode.

"Besides, I also like to watch the new image of the agriculture industry

featured in the programme, which was showed in a relaxed and informal manners by

    the young hosts" he said.

The 10-episode programme was hosted by Datin Annahita Bakavolli, Danny

    X-Factor and Nazruddin Habibur Rahman.
