Janelle Monáe has compared herself to Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.
The American singer is signed to Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs’ label Bad Boy Records and is currently enjoying success with her debut album The ArchAndroid (Suits II and III).
The 25-year-old star was discovered by Outkast’s Big Boi in 2005 when she moved to Atlanta following time spent in New York.
Janelle was introduced to P. Diddy the following year and the rest is history. Music legend Prince allowed her talent to develop and encouraged her musical ability in “intense” jamming sessions.
Janelle has compared the artists who have helped shape her career to reliable characters from popular fantasy story the Wizard of Oz.
“They are my Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow. I’m Dorothy and we are all on a journey to Oz,” she explained in an interview with Pride magazine.
The Grammy Award-winning vocalist insists she owes her growing-fame to all three music moguls. Janelle feels so lucky to be able to work with such iconic music figures as she was inspired by their work as a youngster.
“They help me to where I’m going. They guided me towards larger international exposure, and helped to put me on a main stage so that my music could reach a wider audience,” she revealed. “Everything they did was so encouraging because they are some of the artists who inspired me when I was growing up. I never actually thought I’d get to this level.© Cover Media
