Japan's household spending jumped 4.0 percent in May from a year earlier, government data showed Friday, outpacing economists' expectations for 2.3 percent growth.
Average spending in households with two or more people was 287,911 yen ($3,630) in the month, up 4.0 percent from a year earlier, the internal affairs ministry said.
The increase stemmed mainly from higher spending on vehicles and travel, the data showed, with a government subsidy a major driver of vehicle buying.
