Bayer Leverkusen chief executive Wolfgang Holzhauser has revealed that the club are not in the running to sign Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United this summer.

The Bulgarian striker enjoyed a successful spell at the German side before moving to England, initially with Tottenham, and had been linked with a transfer back to his former team.

However, Holzhauser has conceded that the Bundesliga outfit will not be able to re-sign the 31-year-old, telling Rheinische Post: “Berbatov would only have been interesting if he did not have a fee."

The striker shone after his 2006 move to Spurs, prompting Sir Alex Ferguson to pay in the region of £30 million to secure his services two years later.

Despite finishing as the club’s top scorer in his second season at Old Trafford, he struggled to establish himself and looks poised to depart over the summer.

A host of clubs across Europe have been linked with a move including Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Lazio.
