MasterCard to Buy TNS Payment Gateway to Boost Data Cash

Following a good third-quarter 2014, MasterCard Inc. (MA) announced a pact with Transaction Network Services (:TNS) to acquire the latter’s Payment Gateway Services business for an undisclosed value and terms. The deal is expected to culminate by the end of this year.

TNS Payment Gateway Services offers premier services related to data communications, payment processing and interoperability solutions through its core businesses, namely, eCommerce gateway and card-present gateway. Its data network functions on multi-channel platforms and supports an array of extensively recognized communications protocols, thereby benefiting from the large scale and accessibility of its services.

Hence, TNS Payment Gateway Services’ broad network base and value-added services will complement MasterCard’s DataCash Group Plc subsidiary, which was acquired in Oct 2010. DataCash is thoroughly focused on expanding the technology solutions businesses for eCommerce across the globe.

TNS Payment Gateway Services will integrate with DataCash and help consolidate its position in the U.S. and Latin America for MasterCard-branded card solutions, and also strengthen the company’s global payment gateway solutions. The move will boost MasterCard’s global merchant base and clientele as well as eCommerce revenue opportunities, while mitigating of monetary loss from fraud.

Earlier this week, MasterCard acquired a global consultancy firm – 5one Marketing Ltd. – for analytics and proprietary payments software that processes unique insights and decision-making resources from client data. The acquisition will be added to the company’s professional services wing, MasterCard Advisors, and will enhance MasterCard’s retailer network.

We believe that the acquisitions will accelerate MasterCard’s core processing capabilities in an increasingly complex payments environment. It also reflects the company’s endeavors to adapt to the new emerging industry trends and shore up competitive leverage, while also offering a secure digital payment experience.

MasterCard currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Meanwhile, better-ranked payment processors like Fiserv Inc. (FISV), Xoom Corp. (XOOM) and Total System Services Inc. (TSS), all bearing a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), are worth a look.
