MB crisis shows Pakatan has lost moral high ground, says Soi Lek

The Selangor menteri besar crisis shows that Pakatan Rakyat has lost the moral high ground while the state's voters are the ultimate losers, said a former MCA president.

Tan Sri Chua Soi Lek said the opposition pact was backed by the electorate who had voted in Pakatan representatives after the 2008 general election with the belief that they would usher in a new political era that fought corruption, demanded transparency and accountability and was more people-friendly.

This, he said, was reaffirmed in last year's national polls when Pakatan won the popular vote although they did not take over Putrajaya.

"One year is a long time in politics to see the true colours of politicians. Pakatan has definitely lost the moral high ground when they first came in. We don’t smell fresh air but we smell the stinking political infighting between the three Pakatan parties," he said in a blog posting today.

The tussle for the Selangor menteri besar position has been brewing for more that a month after incumbent Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim was sacked from his party, PKR, for defying orders to step down for president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who has the support of 30 assemblymen in the 56-seat assembly to takeover the post.

Dr Chua accused PR of using everything in their means to sack Khalid just to ensure Dr Wan Azizah become MB.

While stressing he was not personally against Dr Wan Azizah, the former health minister said running Malaysia's wealthiest state was not easy, and that she was obviously a proxy for her husband, opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Anwar Ibrahim.

"This is nothing personal against Dr Wan Azizah. In fact, I admire her for her patience, humility and dedication towards Anwar. But running a fast-developing state like Selangor where even a seasoned politician does not last, we are expecting too much from Dr Wan Azizah to perform rather than just be a figurehead puppet. The man behind the throne is obviously the husband. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand this." – August 28, 2014.
