BUKIT MERTAJAM, May 11 (Bernama) -- Slightly over three per cent of the
country''s fire-fighters are women, and as such the Fire and Rescue Department
plans to raise the percentage to five per cent by next year.
Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim said
the plan to increase the percentage of women fire-fighters from slightly over
400 of 13,000 at present could be met as many women were keen to join the
department.
Speaking to reporters after closing the 23rd National Fire and Rescue Cadet
Camping here today, he said although the department gave priority to men, women
fire-fighters were needed, particularly in the Emergency Medical Rescue
Services.
About 1,000 students nationwide took part in the camping activities at the
Penang Education Department''s Co-Curriculum Centre here.
The Selangor contingent was named the overall champion after winning four
contests - survival, men''s challenges aspect, women''s brain and brawn and men''s
best camp.
